On January 1, Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin gave K-drama fans a New Year gift by officially announcing that they were together. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we took a deep dive into their relationship dynamic and realized there are so many lessons we can learn from this lovable duo who are totally #CoupleGoals. Here are 5 of those lessons.
1. Take it slow
Even before co-starring in The Negotiation (2018), Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin were acquaintances. Case in point: In 2014, they were seated together at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin got close to each other while working on The Negotiation, and since then, they’ve celebrated chuseok (the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving Day) together, gone grocery shopping together while in America, and of course, blessed our screens with Crash Landing on You in 2020.
Getting to know someone before making a commitment and going public with it is always a good idea. Crash landing into a relationship (forgive the pun) *usually* works out only in K-dramas.
2. Finding a partner you can be yourself with
Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin are such goofballs around each other. This is how they celebrated Hyun Bin’s 36th birthday in 2018:

Being able to express yourself authentically, without fear of judgement, is one of the most important factors in a relationship.
3. Unconditional support is everything
Hyun Bin once told the press, “I would like to be with someone who is very understanding. Though there are a lot of people who like my job, there aren’t that many people who truly understand what it entails.” It makes total sense that he fell head over heels for a fellow actor – a mega star in her own right.
A significant other who gets you AND your work is super important, especially if you’re not in a conventional 9-5 job.
4. Don’t stop dreaming
In July 2020, Ye-jin’s agency confirmed she is in talks to join the cast of an upcoming Hollywood movie, Cross, which stars Sam Worthington. While Ye-jin has been in the Korean entertainment industry for over 20 years, this will be her international debut. “To be honest, I didn’t really have a desire to try something out like this. I’m already overwhelmed with Korean projects, so I was afraid whether or not I could act well speaking a foreign language. However, I started thinking about when I would ever be able to try something like this again. If I receive a good opportunity, I’ll happily work hard at it. I get the sense that I’ll get a lot out of it as I take it on,” said Ye-jin in an ELLE interview.
A relationship should anchor you, but never stop you from soaring high. Single or taken, personal and professional growth are non-negotiable.
5. It’s the small things that count
Sure, grand gestures every once in a while are great but it’s the little acts of thoughtfulness that really make a relationship tick. You can make your partner feel loved by watching their favourite movie even though you’re not into it, surprising them with a present, whipping up their favourite meal… OR by keeping them cool on a hot day, à la Hyun Bin.
