She Would Never Know or Sunbae, Don’t Put On That Lipstick has just reached the halfway mark. The eighth episode aired on February 09. And now it’s time for the series to pick up the pace. For anyone who hasn’t started watching the drama, it’s currently playing on JTBC in Korea and IQIYI worldwide. The series stars Rowoon as Chae Hyun-Seung and as Won Jin-ah as Yoon Song-Ah.
The simple summary of the show is it’s the story of people working on the marketing team of a cosmetics brand, with a focus on the senior/junior relationship between Rowoon and Won Jin-ah but the show is so much more than that. If you haven’t watched the show or caught up with all the episodes, then just be warned there are spoilers ahead.
A recap of the first eight episodes:
The show started off by introducing us to Hyun-seung who has a huge unrequited crush on his work senior/sunbae Song-ah. But then he finds out that she is dating Lee Hyun-wook as Lee Jae-shin, their team leader so he is obviously devastated. But then Hyun-seung is even more devastated when he finds out that Jae-shin is getting married in a few months to their director’s sister, Lee Joo-bin as Lee Hyo-joo. Hyun-seung discovers the truth when he spots the pair at his sister’s (Wang Bit-na as Chae Ji-seung) wedding dress shop.
There’s the heartbreaking reveal when Song-ah finds out the truth. But obviously the story needed that because Hyun-seung offers to pretend to be her boyfriend in front of Jae-shin. With all that unrequited crush tension in the air, there were some really cute and adorable moments between Song-ah and Hyun-seung as they try to hide their fake romance from the rest of the office while ensuring that Jae-shin is aware of it.
But we also find out that Jae-shin is more than just a two-timing heartbreaker. He is kinda being forced into marrying Hyo-joo because of the director, Lee Kyu-han as Lee Jae-woon who is also his best friend. Hyo-joo tried to die of suicide and Jae-woon begged Jae-shin to help her. So his only moments of happiness for the past few years was with Song-ah. It’s hard to like Jae-shin but it’s also easy to understand him especially when he’s constantly made to feel less than by the upper class including Jae-woon’s grandfather and his friends.
Another surprising thing is the growing romance between Jae-woon and Ji-seung. It’s love at first sight for the director when he sees Hyun-seung’s sister. He even orders the company to reproduce a discontinued lipstick so that he can see her again.
Anyway the eight episode ends with Song-ah telling Hyun-seung not to give up his feelings for her, leading us to greatly anticipate the next few episodes.
What should happen next:
We need our main couple to get together. When Song-ah made the heart fluttering statement to Hyun-seung it started off something. She is obviously being swayed by her hoobae/junior and his sweet actions to her. But it remains to be seen what will happen and whether she still has feelings for Jae-shin. There’s probably going to be a sweet confession and they’ll start going out. But when Hyo-joo finds out about Song-ah and Jae-shin’s relationship even if they’ve broken up, that’s probably going to cause some tension.
The main thing I wonder about is whether Jae-shin will go through with marrying Hyo-joo. He wants to make a name for himself and escape his bad past but will he do it at the expense of his own happiness.
I just hope the cute and sweet romance between Jae-woon and Ji-seun isn’t affected by all the drama between the other couples. But it likely will as it’s their siblings who they deeply care about who are intertwined in all the drama.
The last big question is what is happening between Hyun-seung’s other sister, her husband and his best friend. I have a few theories but I would honestly like to see it play out and see if what I think is confirmed.
Well I’m sure we can expect much more drama in the second half of the season. But let’s hope we’ll still get plenty of sweet and romantic moments between our leads.
