K-Dramas About Idols And The K-Pop World That Should Be On Your Watchlist

Korean dramas are filled with stories that are diverse and complex. You can find a story or genre for anything you’re looking for. This is great news if you’re a K-pop fan as there are many dramas that focus on the idol and K-pop industry. Just like the rest of dramas, these stories are multi-faceted and give a little peek into the world of the  K-pop industry. These are just some of the dramas that focus on idols and K-pop.

The Producers

Starring Cha Tae-hyun, Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Soo-hyun, and Lee Ji-eun (IU), the drama focuses on the inner workings of the KBS entertainment department. While the drama is not only about idols and K-pop, it does show what goes on behind the scenes. The drama shows what happens behind the scenes at music shows, variety shows and more. IU stars as an idol and shows the struggles and loneliness that accompanies the job. The show is also filled with cameos from several idols. 

Imitation

This drama stars Jung Ji-so, Lee Jun-young, Jeong Yun-ho, and Park Ji-yeon. It is also a drama based on a webtoon of the same name. The drama follows idols in the industry as they try to be successful but also find love and happiness. The show’s cast is filled with several idol actors which adds a certain authenticity to the show. It also has a stellar soundtrack which features songs sung by the actors/singers. The story is sad at times but the ending has a beautiful conclusion. 

Idol: The Coup

This is the most recent idol drama that completed airing. (Let Me Be Your Knight is still showing). This show also has an ensemble cast featuring several idols. It stars Ahn Hee-yeon, Ahn Sol-bin, Han So-eun, Chu So-jung, Kim Ji-won, Kwak Si-yang and Kim Min-kyu. The show focuses on a “failed” idol group. The girl group are on the brink of disbanding and want to achieve one final success before it happens. They have to fight against the people who do not believe in them and think that they are failures. 

Persevere, Goo Hae Ra

This drama is probably not as known as others and it’s shorter but it’s a good one. It stars Min Hyo-Rin, Jinyoung, Kwak Si-Yang, Henry Lau and others. The story is about a girl who wants to debut as a singer so that she can let people know about her late father’s musical compositions. Along with her friends, she takes part in a TV program and makes a group with others. However, they are unable to debut and the show focuses on their reunion several years later.

Dream High

This show directly focuses on young people’s dreams of being idols. It stars Bae Suzy, Ok Taec-yeon, Kim Soo-hyun, Ham Eun-jung, Jang Woo-young and IU. This is probably one of the most popular idol K-dramas out there. It focuses on a group of six students who dream of becoming idols. They train together, learn together and suffer disappointments together on the road to achieving their dreams.
